Perspectives of extension of this common project to a more ambitious proposal to be submitted to funding agencies : Short term
Added value of the cooperation : The goal of this cooperation is to have a close interaction between ITQB and the Scientists responsible for the Macromolecular Crystallography beamline at ALBA (XALOC BL13), this will be essential to prepare our future visits to ALBA, to collect crystallographic data.

Summary of the proposal : The Unit Macromolecular Crystallography (MX) at ITQB is composed by four groups and has different projects, with the common aim of determining crystal structure at high resolutions using synchrotron radiation. Furthermore, and since some of our projects are on metalloproteins, sometimes it is important to  obtain anoumalous data, that is used to solve the phase problem or even to discriminate the nature of the metal on the protein structure. We have been using several synchrotrons in Europe, namely European Synchrotron Radiation (France), Swiss Light Source (Switzerland), Diamond Light Source (UK) and Hamburger Synchrotronstrahlungslabor (HASYLAB, Germany).
It was with great pleasure that we received the news that ALBA - Synchrotron Light Facility in Barcelona - is finally open to public. This synchrotron has different beamlines, and it has one devoted to MX, XALOC – BL13. There was a recent call for projects, to which we applied with a standard proposal for beamtime for one of our projects. As part of the BioStruct-X consortium, this beamline is one of the facilities included on the Macromolecular Crystallography work packages. Therefore we aim to use ALBA and specifically the XALOC – BL13 beamline in a near future.
The workplan of our visit, is to get acknowledged with the setup of the beamline, in terms of technical characteristics, namely the possibility to use automatic mounting, the configuration in terms of data collection, mean time of collection and intensity in order to avoid radiation damage. Furthermore, it is important to know which software the beamline is using, if they have automatic data processing.
The plan for this specific  visit is for only one day, which will be enough for the present purposes.
