Gastro intestinal nematodes are worms that inhabit the digestive tract of sheep and goats. They are an important threat worldwide for ruminant health and welfare and cause major economical losses. Because of the increasing development of resistances to synthetic anti-parasitic drugs in parasite populations, alternative solutions are required. The ability of naturally occurring, bioactive tannins to function as anti-parasitic drugs is one novel solution that we are currently exploring. Some tannins can also improve digestive efficiency and reduce pollutant emissions from ruminant animals.
Description
The PhD student (Early Stage Researcher) will be part of the EU Marie Curie Initial Training Network, LegumePlus, which will provide multi-disciplinary and inter sectoral research and training activities within Europe on legumes containing bioactive metabolites. The PhD student will be hosted in the UMR 1225 IHAP (Interactions Hôte-Agents Pathogènes) which is a joined unit between INRA and the National Veterinary School of Toulouse, in France. The laboratory has expertise in measurements and analysis of the activity of legume extracts and purified tannins against different stages of the nematode life cycle. The student will stay in the UMR IHAP for most of the PhD studies, but he/she will also benefit from two 3-month scientific exchanges with teams from the international network of LegumePlus which includes specialists in tannin analysis. The PhD student will need to participate in bi-annual meetings and in scientific and complementary skills training courses, which will be held in different European laboratories of the LegumePlus project partners. The PhD project aims 1/ at examining the in vitro activity of a suite of identified tannins against key stages and processes of the nematode life cycle (egg development; larval exsheathment and adult worm fertility); 2/ and 3/ to compare in vivo the efficacy of the most promising varieties of sainfoin (Onobrychis viciifoliae) and Lotus corniculatus against the three parasitic stages (egg, infective larvae and adult worms) and to measure the related patho-physiological consequences.
