Nanotechnology has transformed over the last two decades different scientific fields such as chemistry, medicine, computing, electronics and materials science. A transformation made possible through technological breakthroughs such as carbon nanotubes, which have given way to a new generation of materials suitable for the safe storage of hydrogen, the manufacture of new electronic components, development of innovative solar cells or the establishment of resistant materials and extremely flexible. However, many of the potential of this new technology are yet to be exploited. Nanotechnology is set to star in the coming years some of the greatest technological revolutions impact on the efficient solution of the challenges facing twenty-first century society, in domains such as construction, renewable energy, water treatment, and communications.
Sumio Iijima, Prince of Asturias Award for Technical and Scientific Research 2008, will give a lecture on the nanotechnology revolution and its future applications. Professor Iijima is considered the father of carbon nanotubes since he discovered in 1991, the potential in these tubular structures formed by carbon atoms.
